為「平衡南北‧文化均富」並帶動台灣中南部地區的文化、教育、社會、經濟發展
民國93年12月15日行政院核定在嘉義縣太保市設置國立故宮博物院南部院區，定位為「亞洲藝術文化博物館」。
原訂於97年竣工開館，惟陷於履約紛爭，工程停滯，復因莫拉克風災基地淹水高達10.3米，遂於99年10月22日完成修正計畫，重新起動。
博物館硬體建築工程委由營建署代辦；軟體策展則以本院豐富的典藏為主，輔以國際借展，積極策劃各項精彩的展覽，發揮現代博物館應有的典藏、研究、維護、教育、展示、育樂、休閒及文創等各項功能。99年辦理第二次修正計畫增列
軟體建置經費8.34億元，作為徵集亞洲文物及圖書採購之用，總計籌建經費為79.34億元，加入BOT園區投入開發經費30億，總計籌建經費達10,934億元，預定於104年12月28日開館試營運。
国立故宮博物院は17日、台湾中南部、嘉義県で建設中の南部分院「南院」で内外の報道陣に向け記者会見を行った。馮明珠院長は、12月28日に南院をプレオープンさせ、国宝の「翠玉白菜（ヒスイの白菜）」と「肉形石」を相次いで展示すると発表した。また開館当初から催される10大展示では、チベット語の経典「龍蔵経―アジア仏教芸術の美」や、北宋の汝窯青磁と高麗青磁を対比させる形での高麗青磁特別展などを企画し、南院を盛り上げると説明した。
馮院長によると、プレオープン期間は完全予約制とし、10月30日からインターネットで予約を受け付ける。12月28日午後2時から5時まで、同29日から翌年6月30日までは、近隣の雲林県、嘉義県、台南市の地元の人は入場無料とする。それ以外の国内外からの入場者は12月29日から翌年3月31日まで無料。

本院近年來在典藏、管理、維護、展覽、研究、推廣等各方面全力以赴，積極與國際知名博物館進行互動及學術交流，提升博物館各項功能，重視普世性的多元觀與國際觀，使故宮融合時代脈動成為全民的博物館。
1.99年11月與法國吉美博物館簽訂合作意向書，開啟本院與國際重要博物館簽約建立正式交流首例，並展開兩個博物館合作的嶄新階段。故宮與吉美首項合作為建國百年推出「康熙大帝與太陽王路易十四特展」，吉美博物館除了借展貿易瓷收藏等文物，並協助統籌法國借展相關事宜。該館目前正與本院洽談商借玉器以籌辦中國玉器展。另吉美博物館也承諾將於故宮南部院區開館後，支援借展其聞名世界的亞洲藝術收藏，並合作舉辦「柬埔寨藝術展」，雙方合作密切。
2.與日本大阪市立東洋陶瓷美術館、日本東京國立博物館、瀋陽故宮等洽商相關國際借展及回饋展等事宜，本院於103年1月21日與日本大阪市立東洋陶瓷美術館舉辦文物借展簽約儀式，簽約內容包括「尚青─高麗青瓷特展」175組件文物與「揚帆萬里─日本伊萬里瓷器特展」161組件文物，展期安排自104年底至107年。另「日本美術之最：東京國立博物館暨九州國立博物館珍藏展」將於105年12月至106年3月展出，包括日本繪畫、佛教雕刻、陶瓷、漆器、圖書、文獻等約150組件，其中含日本國寶、重要文化財、重要美術品計68件，現正洽簽合約階段。另瀋陽故宮將於開幕首展中借展數件藏品，現正洽簽合約中。
3.103年3月31日與舊金山亞洲藝術博物館簽署合作備忘，預定105年本院精選文物赴該館展出，該館回饋亞洲藝術文物安排於106年在故宮南院展出。
The National Palace Museum in recent years has made an all-out and comprehensive effort to enhance its collections, management, preservation and maintenance paradigms, exhibitions, research, and public outreach. In the process we have proactively interacted and initiated academic exchanges with renowned museums overseas. Our goal is to upgrade all of the Museum’s functions and stress an ecumenical, multifaceted, and international outlook to ensure the Museum will hold the pulse of the times and truly act as a museum serving all people.
1. In Nov. 2010 we signed a cooperation letter of intent with France’s Guimet Museum. This constitutes the first example of our Museum signing a formal exchange agreement with another important international museum and marks the launching of a new era of collaboration between these two institutions. The National Palace Museum and the Guimet Museum first collaborated on the exhibition of “Emperor Kangxi and the Sun King Louis XIV” to celebrate the Republic of China’s first centennial. The Guimet Museum not only loaned artifacts and other materials from its Chinese export porcelain collection but also assisted us with the handling of all matters pertaining to museum loans in France. Right now the Guimet Museum is in discussions with us to arrange a loan from our jade collection as it prepares to host a Chinese jade exhibition. Additionally, the Guimet Museum has issued a promise that once the Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum opens it will loan us pieces from its globally renowned Asian art collection as an expression of its support. We also plan to collaborate hosting a “Cambodian Art Exhibition”. In brief, our two museums have a very close and productive relationship.
2.We have entered into negotiations with the Museum of Oriental Ceramics - Osaka, the National Tokyo Museum - Japan, and the Shenyang Palace Museum regarding international loans and reciprocal exhibitions. The National Palace Museum held a Loan Agreement-signing ceremony with the Museum of Oriental Ceramics - Osaka on Jan. 21st, 2014. The agreement stipulates that the National Palace Museum will host “Cerulean Blue - A Special Exhibition of Goryeo Celadons” featuring a total of 175 sets of artifacts and “Sailing a Thousand Leagues - A Special Exhibition of Japanese Imari Porcelain” featuring a total of 161 sets of artifacts from the end of 2015 through to 2018. Moreover we are in negotiations pursuant to hosting “Masterpieces of Japanese Art: the Tokyo and Kyushu National Museum’s Special Exhibition” from Dec. 2016 through Mar. 2017. This will encompass about 150 sets of artifacts in total including Japanese paintings, Buddhist sculptures, ceramics, lacquer wares, books, historical documents, and so forth, of which 68 pieces constitute Japanese national treasures and/or significant cultural properties and art works. In addition to this, we are in the midst of negotiations with the Shenyang Palace Museum to arrange a loan from their collection for our major exhibition on opening day.
3.We signed a Memorandum of Understanding for cooperating with the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, USA, on March 31st, 2014. As stipulated in the agreement, select artifacts from our collection will be exhibited in the Asian Art Museum in 2016 and in return the artifacts from its collection will be exhibited in the Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum in 2017.

規劃設計理念
博物館建築以中國水墨畫濃墨、飛白與渲染三種技法，形成實量體展示空間及文物庫房、虛量體公共接待空間與穿透連接空間，象徵著中華、印度與波斯三股文化交織出悠遠流長多元的亞洲文明，契合「故宮南院－亞洲藝術文化博物館」宗旨。博物館建築、景觀橋及周邊景觀工程，由大元聯合建築師事務所姚仁喜建築師設計，是鑽石級「綠色建築」；主體建築設計結合最高等級防震措施，以 base isolation 規劃隔震設計，提升建築耐震度；同時兼具防洪、防旱等功能，也是黃金級「智慧建築」。
故宮南院主體建築造型由兩個流線型量體交織而成，作為「龍」、「象」、「馬」文化象徵的隱喻。為呼應主體建築的造型，銜接建築量體動勢，景觀橋的結構形式與造型採用書法中草書的形式，以富韻律的動態氣勢引導入館人群接近主體建築，並提供參覽遊客最獨特與舒適的步行經驗。
景觀橋橫跨南端人工湖，將參觀遊客由龍馬象圓形廣場接引至博物館二樓大廳。由於跨湖距離約130M，為避免湖中落柱影響原有湖底防水效果，本案以不落橋墩之結構形式，呈現140公尺之大跨度單拱橋的宏觀設計。
綠建築：依2009年版綠建築分級評估核定記分59.22分，達鑽石級。
智慧建築：為提升營運管理效益、強化博物館安全之需求，以達安全防災、貼心便利、健康舒適目標，
辦理黃金級智慧型標章申請。

The Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum and the National Tourism Bureau have worked together to develop three-day tour packages integrating scenic spots on the outskirts of Yunlin, Chiayi, and Tainan cities. Our preliminary three-day tour package itineraries are as follows

The Grand Palace Museum Project
大故宮計畫
In coordination with President Ma Ying-jeou’s Golden Decade National Vision policy of “national reinvigoration via culture,” the National Palace Museum (NPM) in 2011 launched the Grand Palace Museum Project.
The plan currently focuses on accelerating the construction of the NPM Southern Branch—an Asian arts and culture museum—in Chiayi County while expanding and renovating the NPM in Taipei as well as building an arts and cultural park there.
To showcase the NPM internationally and to comprehensively develop its cultural and educational functions, the project’s work on the Taipei NPM is centered on improving exhibition quality and reception spaces as well as increasing the number of artifacts on display. To meet demand for special exhibitions and international loan exhibitions, the NPM has redesigned its exhibition space, incorporated digital technology and renewed its means of showcasing.
The NPM and its southern branch will possess equal status and shoulder the same missions while complementing each other in functions and exhibitions. When the new branch opens, the public will get to know the NPM collection from a more diverse perspective, and the development of southern Taiwan’s cultural and tourism industries will be advanced.
In the future, the NPM and its southern branch will develop interregional and cross-sector integration through educational promotion and cultural creativity, bringing about the development of relevant industries.

國內外旅客前往故宮南院之交通方式
Transportation
（一）大眾運輸
遊客可搭乘高鐵或台鐵至嘉義站，轉乘接駁公車或客運抵達南院，車程約10分鐘。嘉義縣政府現規劃有13條路線，其中8條停靠高鐵嘉義站，5條直達停靠故宮南院（北）站，合計每日往返490班次，最大載客量達2萬2,450人次。此外，嘉義縣政府刻正規劃自行車道，亦將經過故宮南院。
1. Public Transportation
Visitors can take the High Speed Rail or a regular train to Chiayi Station then transfer to a bus taking you to the Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum. Travel time by bus is about 10 minutes. The Chiayi County Government has scheduled 13 routes now, with 8 routes stopping at the High Speed Rail Chiayi Station and 5 routes going nonstop to the Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum (North) Station. In total, there are 490 bus shifts making the round trip daily. Maximum daily passenger capacity is 22,450 passengers. Additionally, the Chiayi County Government is planning a bicycle lane passing next to the Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum.

故宮南院位於嘉義縣太保市東勢里故宮大道888號，民眾可行駛國道1號經台168線，或循台82快速道路經嘉45線抵院參觀。園區內規劃有南側、北側及西側3座停車場（西側停車場不對一般大眾開放），合計有停車位大客車33輛、小客車415輛、機車218輛，以及自行車70輛。
2. Car or Motorcycle Arrivals:
The Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum is located at No. 888 Gugong Blvd., Dongshi Village, Taibao City, Chiayi County. To get here, visitors can take Freeway No. 1 and transfer to County Highway 168 or follow Provincial Highway 82 (Expressway) and transfer to the Chiayi No. 45 Line Road. There are 3 parking lots on the north, south, and west sides of the museum. (The west side parking lot is not open to the public). In total we have parking space accommodating 33 buses, 415 passenger cars, 218 motorcycles, and 70 bicycles.
